Flat of the Blade

Instead of making their own videos for the much anticipated Heligoland album, Massive Attack took more of an “everyman” approach, and commissioned 7 low budget videos.

Massive Attack’s approach is like their music, collaborative, augmentative. Robert “3D” Del Naja has said ““We are always keen not to be in the videos, and not to compromise the idea by having to make an appearance…on the whole it has been a case of carte blanche with the directors, to the extent where we said: ‘We will give you the stems of the tracks and you can use whichever components you want, loop some parts, take the vocals out…’ We have always been totally unprecious.”

Ewan Spencer selected “Flat of the Blade” for his documentary on gang members in Birmingham. You can read the interview with Ewan Spencer and watch Flat of the Blade here, at Dazed Digital or watch them all over at Massive Attack’s site.

“You said I loved you like a renegade”

Canadian Music Week is all finished, and this springy weather has me thinking of lazy summer sunshine, small towns and festivals.
